ARTICLES AND TIPS: WEDDING TRENDS OF 2010

Welcome to the Wedding Season of 2010!

I have been busy spotting this year’s wedding trends so I figured; it’s probably just fitting to start this year’s blog with…The Wedding Trends of 2010.

1.  Black.  Everything, from wedding flowers (think black and white anemones), bridesmaids’ dresses, wedding invitations, and wedding gown trimmings. And why not?  This color is so versatile that you can go from classic to modern.

2.  Short Wedding Dress.  We have been seeing this trend for a while now.  And I think brides are starting to really embrace this idea, which is why I think this trend is here to stay.

3.  Lace.  And I don’t mean just on your wedding dress.  Think of incorporating lace in other aspects of your wedding such as favor packaging, invitations, napkin rings…  You get the idea.

4.  Pearls.  Pearl jewelry today are modern and edgy.  Pearls come in different colors and jewelery designers now are also incoporating them with colorful gemstones to make a bold statement. And don’t just think necklace, you can also wear pearl as a bracelet, cocktail ring, or earrings.

5. Orange.  Last year’s big color was purple.  And according to “trendspotters,” this year’s big fashion color is ORANGE.  Since today’s brides are also fashionistas, expect to see a lot of this color in this year’s wedding accessories.

ARTICLES AND TIPS: WEDDING LOCATIONS

Picking the perfect venue for your wedding is one of the most important steps in creating a wedding you and your guests will love.  Here are a few suggestions you can consider as you plan your event.

BANQUET HALL/HOTEL BALLROOM:  Treat it as a blank canvas.  Decorate as you want and put your personal stamp to it.

VINEYARD:  Think trellises and dramatic views.

COUNTRY CLUB:  The interior may look plain but the view can be spectacular.

BACKYARD:  Pesonalize away!  You can go for something as casual as a cookout or a more formal catered event.

BEACH:  Think sun, sand, sky - casual yet romantic!

CHURCH:  With strong creativity, you can do a whole lot to achieve a pretty and personal look.

RESTAURANT:  The food is good but the decor maybe bland.  Dress up the place and it will sure to wow your guests.

GARDEN:  With great scenery, not much embelishment is needed.  But be sure to have a back-up plan in case Mother Nature does not cooperate with your plans.

HISTORIC PLACE/MANSION/MUSEUM:  With elegant furnishings and elegant architecture, this venue is a classic place many brides dream about.

ARTICLES AND TIPS: MODEST PROPOSALS

I recently came across an article from the June 2009 issue of Vogue Magazine entitled “Modest Proposals.” This article lists creative and innovative ideas on how to throw a wedding on a budget without sacrificing style and elegance.  It’s about considering restraint in order to spend a bit more on what matters to you.  Pare back in certain areas, and indulge in others.

1. Bouquets
Keep the bridal bouquet grand but petite.  Bridesmaids’ bouquets are chic and can be had for $25 each.
2. The Planning
Be your own wedding planner and document ideas and resources in a journal that becomes a keepsake of its own.
3. The Ring
Discreet love knots make for a charming engagement ring or wedding band
4. The Personal Touches
Enlist friends and family, the artist to do calligraphy or the music buff to deejay.
5. The Dress
At J.Crew, the all-American retailer’s wedding collection rises to the occasion with sophisticated silhouettes and exquisite details that make brides stand out and shine.
6. The Registry
Be thoughtful of your guests’ budgets.  Register for gifts with practicality and price range in mind.
7. The Location
Hold the event at a friend or family member’s residence to avoid location fees.
8. The Menu
Serve only one course, a main (try substituting short ribs for filet mignon or cod for lobster) accompanied by family-style dishes.
9. The Flowers
Long-lasting, in-season blooms (snapdragons in summer, pee gee hydrangeas in fall, carnations in winter and hyacinths in spring) can be repurposed throughout the wedding weekend.
10. The “Something Borrowed”
A piece of your grandmother’s heirloom jewelry is both stylish and meaningful.  Consider, too, other necessities like your mother’s dress, the getaway car, or vases for floral arrangements.
11. The Music
Program an iPod for the rehearsal dinner and pre-reception cocktail hour.
12. The Send-Off
Instead of hosting a morning-after brunch, send guests home with a basket of late night treats.
13. The Invitation
Opt for an elegant, classic card in a color that fits the event’s scheme.  While engraving is the traditional method, letterpress and flat printing are less expensive options that still deliver gorgeous results.
14. The Cake
Try making it (but not the night before).  A fruitcake preserved with liqueur like Grand Marnier can be made several months in advance.
15. The Eco Slant
Save money and the environment.  Incorporate potted plants into the decor, then give them away as favors.
16. The Honeymoon
With a stronger dollar, a wedding trip to France - the perfect combination of city, and coast - is ever romantic and once again affordable.  Reserve a room through chateauxhotels.com, which lists more than 500 properties from the Cote d’Azur to the Perigord.
17. The Theme
Set the dress code (black-and-white, masquerade) so that guests become part of the decor, enhancing the setting for rich, memorable photographs.
